Katikati is acknowledged as New Zealand’s Mural Town; a town that illustrates its history with many different art forms and mediums in its outdoor art gallery. The town’s streets are full of numerous beautiful artworks that have been created over the last thirty years by local, national and international artists.
Katikati has more recently been recognised as New Zealand’s Avocado Capital, an addition to Katikati’s rich history and worthy of celebration.
An opportunity has arisen to create an artwork that reflects Katikati’s identity as both NZ Mural Town and New Zealand’s Avocado Capital. The Katikati community is inviting expressions of interests from artists to create a new sculpture artwork to celebrate a combination of these themes.
THE BRIEF:
WOW is the key factor. The sculpture must be an artwork that grabs people's attention. It must clearly tell our story, incorporating both the avocado and art theme.
The location for this artwork is a wide-open space alongside the Main Road visible to passing traffic.
KEY INFORMATION:
Size - The footprint for the artwork is flexible. The space is wide, open and level.
Height – Between four to five metres – but again height is flexible.
Materials – The sculpture must be durable, strong and built to last.
Design – The sculpture artwork needs to be solid and withstand (or harness!) strong winds that occur in the exposed site location. The general public could also be able to touch or interact with the sculpture.
Budget - The total cost for the finished artwork requires an itemised break-down to ensure all areas are covered and costed for.
Health & Safety - As the artwork is situated in a public space, on a council reserve, all aspects of Health and Safety requirements must be met and adhered to at all stages of installation, construction and siting of the finished product.
Project Timeframe - The successful artist will be required to have the artwork completed and installed by the end of 2022.
Submissions Deadline - Submissions need to be in by 31 March 2022.
